10 Golden Rules to Resume Writing

1. Start with a summary page

2. List educational qualifications and include any high grades/achievements

3. Interests and personal details are optional but can be a good talking point

4. Reverse chronological summaries of work history provide a useful “at a glance” career snapshot for an interviewer

5. Ensure accuracy of dates, no gaps, correct titles and correct grammar. This applies to the covering email/letter as well as the resume!

6. Avoid assuming interviewers know your industry jargon, abbreviations or what your company does. Give brief explanations

7. Avoid writing “generic” resumes, ensure they are achievement-oriented

8. Tailor your resume and have a number of alternate ones if need be. We can assist with this

9. Tailor your covering letter/application to specifically address what is being asked for. We can assist with this

10. Make sure your contact details are up-to-date and that you have an answering machine!
